Q&A with Jeriz Comia, Technical Writer

What initially attracted you to Shapr3D?

I want to start with my role. I am a technical writer, and I’m super passionate about it. I've always been open to opportunities for career growth. I found Shapr3D through LinkedIn job alerts set to worldwide. The job description was the main attraction - it aligned with what I love doing while allowing me to learn new skills. I did some research on Shapr3D and saw it was a CAD company. Many technical writers don’t have a technical background, but I have an engineering degree, so I understand CAD. For me, it’s crucial to work with a product I can learn thoroughly to write proper documentation. Shapr3D seemed like a good fit, and the relocation package to Hungary sealed the deal. I moved here from the Philippines to join Shapr3D. In the Philippines, people often prefer remote work due to commuting challenges, but I love coming into the office here. The culture is great, the city is wonderful, the food is fantastic, and it’s not too expensive.

What excites you the most about working on Shapr3D’s product, and how do you think we’re uniquely solving challenges for our users?

I hope this doesn’t sound too cliché, but everyone here loves the product, and that’s really exciting - it gets you pumped. The company produces a great product, and everyone contributes to that success. From a personal perspective, I love how the company supports growth. My role is unique, and my managers are very supportive, encouraging me to explore different tracks and grow in ways I find fascinating.

What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your role, and what’s been the hardest obstacle you’ve overcome here so far?

Being the only technical writer here is a challenge, especially in a young company without set, streamlined processes. I’ve had to figure things out as I go. What has helped is knowing my role well and receiving support from a highly collaborative team. Everyone I work with helps me overcome challenges, making it easier to navigate obstacles.

How has your role evolved since you started at Shapr3D? Are there new responsibilities or skills you’ve taken on that you never imagined you would?

My role has evolved significantly. I’m not just writing documentation anymore, I now own the Shapr3D Help Center, managing the entire website, including its theme, design, and assets.
This isn’t something a technical writer typically does, but my technical background and problem-solving skills allowed me to take it on. I identified areas for improvement and was given the freedom to address them. It’s been exciting to refresh the technical knowledge I learned during university and apply it here. Previously, at a larger company, I only worked on maintenance tasks, so I didn’t get to cover as much. At Shapr3D, it’s more fun, exciting, and challenging, I never get bored.

How would you describe your work-life balance at Shapr3D? What stands out about how your team collaborates or supports each other?

Even though we are office-first, I love the flexibility to manage personal commitments. Managers trust you to do your work and deliver. If you’re sick, they encourage you to rest and prioritize yourself. I have a good work-life balance, I can enjoy weekends and easily book holidays. Within the marketing team, everyone is very supportive. We have regular meetings to collaborate and stay updated with each other’s work.

What has surprised you the most about working here, and why?

The trajectory of everyone’s career here is surprising. My personal experience has been very unique. The company allows me to carve my own track. Because I’m not just doing technical writing, more doors are opening than I ever expected. Regular performance reviews (every six months) have been incredibly helpful, with managers offering feedback and support to help me excel in challenges I want to take on.
